Hello again!

Wow.  It has been almost a year since I have last posted.  I am a bit embarrassed.  I think I have a good excuse though.  With the birth of our 4th last May, our life became just a little more busy.  And on top of that I decided to less busy my life.  Many things went on the back burner.  One of those things being this blog.  However, I am glad to report, I am back.  Hopefully to post things a little more often.

So what have we been up to?  Well that is easy.  THE KIDS.  Sports, school, church, home, LIFE!!  Our new little edition (not so little anymore) has our favorite thing to keep us busy.  I will have to post about her in a later post.

This post is just a little shout out to say HELLO AGAIN.  We are still here and with the start of Spring Break, ready to start posting some of our fun projects and adventures.  Before heading off to baseball practice in 30 mins I though I would share with you two of our little beauties.

To you remember this little beauty.  Razy is now 5 1/2.  Where is my little girl going.  She has become quite the little lady.  I found an idea similar to this on pinterest and made it my own by having her hold a picture of the Seattle Temple (where JBody and I were sealed).  She had quite a fun time wearing my wedding dress and even showed her friend that day the dress she got to wear.

Now meet our newest edition.  Can you believe that part of the reason I haven't posted is because I can't come up with a name that is fitting for this spunky, cute, bald, baby?  I know lame excuse. Without further ado here she is (well her back side).  We will reveal more latter.  Lil' E hates this picture because is shows her bum.  He thinks we need to blur it out.

Week Long Easter: Easter Egg Lesson

Once again, we plan on focusing on the spiritual parts of Easter.  We did this last year and the kids really enjoyed it.  I don't mind them having fun with holidays.  Candy is fun, egg hunts are fun, and the Easter Bunny is fun.  However, more importantly Christ is the whole reason we celebrate Easter.  We want our children growing up understanding this.  Christmas and Easter both have such spiritual importance and we focus on it each year. This week I will share with you some of the things we do to reinforce the true meaning of Easter.

You'll need 12 large Easter eggs labeled on the outside from 1-12 and put the following items inside:
#1 Sacrament cup (or a small cup)
#2 three dimes
#3 small rope or twine
#4 soap chip
#5 red cloth, thorns
#6 cross (use a toothpick) and one small nail
#7 dice
#8 sponge, stick
#9 rocks
#10 white linen cloth, round stone
#11 spices (bay leaf and clove)
#12 leave empty

Read each of the following scriptures as you open each egg:
#1 Matthew 26:39
#2 Matthew 26:14-15, thus fulfilling the prophecy in Zechariah 11:12-14
#3 Matthew 27:1-2
#4 Matthew 27:24-26
#5 Matthew 27:28-30
#6 Matthew 27:31-32, and he was crucified and nailed to a cross.
#7 Matthew 27:35-36
#8 Matthew 27:46, 48
#9 Matthew 27:50-51, 54
#10 Matthew 27:57-60
#11 Matthew 28:1 (bringing sweet spices to anoint Him) 2, and verse 5
#12 Matthew 28:6 "He is not here: for He is risen as He said."

Inspirational Weekend

Yesterday was a the start of what would turn out to be a very spiritually uplifting weekend.  It was a very bittersweet day yesterday as we as a family attended a funeral for a family member who had passed away.  It was a very unexpected death.  One that no one wants to hear has happened.  You see, our cousin just lost her sweet little 9 month old to SIDS.  The news came on the Tuesday the 20th.  Little Ryleigh had passed that morning.  Being pregnant added extra emotions for me. I thought of his mother.  I thought of the pain, the mourning, and the grief that she must be going through.  I know that I could not even imagine to the extent that it really was.  For the next week and a half I continued to think of her.

We talked as a family of what had happended on Monday for Family Home Evening.  We have been preparing Lil' E for his baptism that will be coming up.  We believe that at the age of 8 children are at the age of accountabilty and ready to be baptized.  It is the first step in their life that they will take to be able to return and live with our Father in Heaven (for more information on what we believe visit HERE). We have talked alot about this ordinance and wanted to explain to them that although Ryleigh was only 9 months and hadn't been baptized he was going to return and live with Heavenly Father.  He was perfect and without sin.  We didn't really know what to expect from each of the kids, but we knew it was important for them to be there with us as we went to the funeral.

Yesterday was the funeral. As we listened to Vanessa share Ryleigh's life story, I was in awe of her strength. I was amazed in her faith and her trust she placed in Christ.  Although her little baby was taken early she was strong.  She knew that he was taken early because he had fulfilled his purpose in life.  As a mother of three children myself, I questioned myself.  Could I have that much faith?  Could I place all my grief in his hands?  My testimony of the gospel was only strengthened as each person spoke on the Plan of Salvation.  There were many tears shed.  Many of us were grieving, if not all.  However, the spirit was so strong and I know that every person there was touched by it.  Even our little 7 year old, Lil' E, felt it.  It was very overwhelming for him.  However, as a mother, was so touched that he knew that he was feeling and recognizing the Spirit.

Today we were once again filled with inspiration and words meant for us from our Heavenly Father given through the Prophet, Apostles, and leaders of the church.  Tomorrow we once again get to be spiritually filled.  Not only were JBody and I able to listen, but each of our kids were able to sit and learn.  Yes they got antsy.  Yes, there were times that they got distracted.  However, they also were able to feel the spirit and be taught.

Some of my favorite things from today:

"Don't hyperventilate about something that happened at 9 o'clock in the morning when the grace of God is trying to reward you at 6 o'clock in the evening." -Jeffrey R. Holland

"Family time is Sacred time." -Boyd K. Packer

Summerized: Our Father in Heaven knows and loves our children.  He knows what they need to know to become and return to him.  It is not intended for us as parents to teach them alone.  We need to turn to him for help with each of our children. -Cheryl A. Esplin

"There is no end in the capacity to Love." -Paul E. Koelliker

"If the foundation of faith is not imbedded in our hearts, the power to endure with crumble."-Henry B. Eyring

"Acting on a twig of faith allows God to grow it."-Henry B. Eyring

"Be Kind and be grateful that God is kind.  It is a happy way to live." -Jeffrey R. Holland

"You can't be right by doing wrong.  You can't be wrong by doing right."- President Thomas S. Monson

"When one is tone death in the music of faith, he is out of tune with the spirit." -Quentin L. Cook

These are some of the notes I took from today.  If you would like to hear more or read everything that was spoken in todays session of General Conference you can visit HERE.

And now it is time to spend some more time with the family before it is off to bed.  Then up in the morning for another day of inspiration and spiritual feasting.

Happy Dr. Seuss Day!

Lil' E has been so excited about Dr. Seuss's birthday this whole week.  They talked about it at school on Monday and every day since he has brought it up.  I thought it would be fun to make a celebration out of it.  Lil' E loves Dr. Seuss books.  They are some of his favorites.  What started out as an idea to bring a small snack to school, turned into a full Dr. Seuss dinner.
Many of the ideas I found on pinterest.com.  Others I found on individual blogs and some were my own.  Probably done by others, but aren't most ideas you come up with like that?

The Yink's Pink Ink Drink
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish
Strawberry Lemonade

The Cat in the Hat Parfaits
The Cat in the Hat
Strawberry Jello and Cool Whip

Poodles Eating Noodles
Fox in Socks
Pasta Salad

Green Eggs and Ham
Green Eggs and Ham
Deviled eggs died green and spiral ham.

Oh the Places Pinwheels
Oh the Places You'll Go

Brown Bar-Ba-Loots Trufulla Fruits
The Lorax
Fruit Platter

Butter Side Down Bread
The Butter Battle Book
Rolls

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish
Rainbow Goldfish Crackers

I thought it would be really fun to take the kids to see The Lorax since it came out today.  But trying to pull off the dinner and get the house clean to have my parents over tonight was enough for me.  Maybe another night.  Doble was actually asking if he could have a Dr. Seuss birthday party.  If this is what he chooses I guess I better save these ideas for it.  There were a couple more ideas I thought of, but I just ran out of time.  To be honest we had plenty of food with what I did make.

So what did you do to celebrate Dr. Seuss Day, Read Across America?

Strawberry Shortcake Pedicure

For Christmas Lil' E got Razy her own set of Strawberry Shortcake nail polishes.  She loves them and the lip glosses that came with them.  They are fun colors and even had a faint fruity scent to them. They are like all little girl polishes that chip off very easily, but she loves them and that is all that matters.
Razy asked to get her finger nails and her toe nails done today.  I am reluctant to do this most days because she just picks it off.  After she got her own little pedicure by mommy, she asked if she could do mine.  This was the first time she has ever asked.  I knew that they would turn out pretty messy, but said yes anyways.
She was very careful not to get it all over the place and actually tried to wipe the edges off with a wet wipe.  She even had a little patter-ern  going on.
patter-ern= her word for pattern.

Sunday Night Popcorn and AFV

The kids love watching American Funniest Videos and Daddy loves Sunday night treats.  Usually we do caramel popcorn or rice krispy treats. Tonight after making 2 16 inch cakes for an upcoming Blue & Gold Banquet I wasn't too thrilled to have to make something else.  Where  did I turn to?  Pinterest of course. I found a mixture of our two favorite easy treats.
Marshmallow Caramel Poporn
Popped popcorn- 3/4 cup kernels or 3 bags microwave popcorn
2 sticks butter
1 cup brown sugar
16oz bag of marshmallows
Melt butter, brown sugar, and marshmallows on the stovetop or microwave until a creamy sauce.
Pour over popcorn and enjoy!

Do you watch AFV?  I remember watching it every sunday as a kid.  It is so fun to see the reactions of our kids.  It is so much funnier to watch it with them than by yourself.

Don't Take the Hook {My Family Monday}

It has been awhile since I've put a Family Home Evening Lesson on the blog.  I thought I would share with you our lesson for tonight. The timing worked out great because we just got home from camping where we also went fishing.

Lesson:
*How do you fish? - let the girls tell you - (get a fishing pool, put something on the hook, real worm or fake worm, then they cast it into the water and reel in the lure so it moves around so it looks like food etc...)

Did you know that Adapted Fisherman will study the trout’s/fish behavior, the weather, the water currents and type of insect they like to eat. They knows those artificial insects embedded with tiny hooks need to be perfect deception so the fish don’t see the slightest flow and reject it.

Did you know that Satan is a master “Fisherman” he has some pretty good tricky lures, Satan uses artificial lures to fool and catch us too, he tempts, deceives and tries to ensnare us, only he doesn’t catch you and release you, he likes to keep you. He likes to make bad look good, he has been fishing for many years and has already hooked a lot of people. He knows what artificial lures look good to us.

- Story: Chip gets hooked

There was a fish name Chip, all of the older fish had taught him and gave him warnings to stay away from worms, his head was full of advice. One day Chip was out swimming alone when all at once he seen a worm and he thought how could that be? How could this worm be so bad for me? It looks so good. He thought for sure the older fish were just trying to scare him. He thought I’m going to eat that worm, I see nothing wrong with it. Just as he was about to eat the worm one of the older fish pushed him away and said CHIP did you not see the hook? Chip did not see the hook he only seen the yummy worm.

This older fish took Chip to the shoreline to show him what happens to fish who take a bit. Some of the fish were barely alive, some had their jaws ripped opens, some just hanged around close to shore and the birds would eat them. Everything he seen was horrible. He thought well maybe they are not as smart as me, I would be smart and only take worm with out getting hooked. Well one day he thought he would give it a try and he took a big bite and he thought this does not taste good, it taste like plastic, then he stared to feel pain in his mouth, he tried really hard to get away but he couldn't he was caught.

* Satan tries to tempt us everyday and sometimes we don’t see the whole picture, you girls need to have faith and listen to your parents and leaders, Satan wants to drag us away from our Heavenly Father. He will always try new bait and temptations, he doesn’t care if you get hurt.

We are all like fish swimming around that worm hook – tempted to take a bite and Satan knows our weakness.

What are some things people get hooked on? (drugs, lying, cheating, stealing, drinking, smoking, gossip, dress unmodest, etc…)

So how do we know if something is good or that it is one of Satan’s hooks? (if it doesn’t agree with Heavenly Fathers commandments, we should stay away, if we ask our Heavenly Father for help he will show us the way out) (1 nephi 15:24) (1 cor 10:13)

---Super easy, fast, craft----- to remind them not to get hook by Satan

Activity: Don't Get Hooked Bracelet
The original idea was to make a bracelet out of fishing swivels.  However, I could only find ones that contained lead.  I didn't think it would be a good idea to have the kids wearing lead bracelets.  So I came up with another idea.

You will need: bracelet braiding cord and little fishing corkies.
I just braided a bracelet and every so often added a corky.

Lesson idea came from Sugardoodle

Daddy We Love You Because...

Happy Father's Day!
There are many reasons why we love our Daddy.  The kids share a couple in the collage below, but let's share a couple more with you.
Daddy We Love You Because...
  You always tickle us,
You always hug us,
You are our best buddy,
You are funny
You are always nice to us,
Love, Lil' E, Doble, and Razy
I should have gotten a picture of this framed, but JBody already took it to the office.  I found the "Daddy We Love You Because..." download at Positively Splendid.  She had this cute idea for Father's Day and I thought it was adorable.  The kids each told me why they loved daddy and then we wrote it onto the black paper.  Over at Positvely Splendid she walks you through the process of creating a collage if you don't know how to make one.  If  you do it quickly you can get this printed and framed in no time.  Even quicker if you print it off yourself and already have a frame.  Happy Father's Day!

Week Long Easter: The Last Supper

Today for lunch we dressed up in New Testament attire and shared a meal that may have been similar to that which Jesus might have eaten.  We talked to the kids about how Jesus washed the feet of his Apostle's.  We talked about the Last Supper and why it is called the Last Supper.  The kids looked so cute dressed up in their costumes, drinking grape juice from their goblets, and eating olives from their fingers.  They surprised me again with their knowledge about why Christ washed the feet of his Apostles and entertained us with their goofy personalities.

The Menu:
lamb, veal, and beef kabobs
grapes
strawberries
boiled eggs
salad with balsamic vinegar dressing
unleavened bread
olives
grape juice

Unleavened Bread Recipe:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine in a bowl: 1 tsp. salt and 1/2 tsp. baking soda. Cut in 2 tablespoons of butter. Stir in 2/3 cup buttermilk. Mix in one egg and two cups flour. Using a rolling pin, roll dough into several pieces and roll out very thin on a floured board (if not rolled out thin, it will have the consistency of heavy bread). Lay sheet of dough on ungreased flat baking pans. Prick with a fork. Cut into 4-inch squares with a sharp knife or pizza cutter. Bake 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned.

What a fun and meaningful way to teach our children about the events leading up to Christ's Resurrection.
What Easter Traditions do you share with your family?

Week Long Easter: Easter Egg Lesson

This year we are going to focus on Easter like we have done with Christmas. When Lil' E was a baby my mom gave me an Easter Egg lesson that I have since lost pieces to and now can't seem to find any of it.  As I was searching the internet I was grateful to find that others were willing to share it and now I can share it with the kids.

You'll need 12 large Easter eggs labeled on the outside from 1-12 and put the following items inside:

#1 Sacrament cup (or a small cup)
#2 three dimes
#3 small rope or twine
#4 soap chip
#5 red cloth, thorns
#6 cross (use a toothpick) and one small nail
#7 dice
#8 sponge, stick
#9 rocks
#10 white linen cloth, round stone
#11 spices (bay leaf and clove)
#12 leave empty

Read each of the following scriptures as you open each egg:
#1 Matthew 26:39
#2 Matthew 26:14-15, thus fulfilling the prophecy in Zechariah 11:12-14
#3 Matthew 27:1-2
#4 Matthew 27:24-26
#5 Matthew 27:28-30
#6 Matthew 27:31-32, and he was crucified and nailed to a cross.
#7 Matthew 27:35-36
#8 Matthew 27:46, 48
#9 Matthew 27:50-51, 54
#10 Matthew 27:57-60
#11 Matthew 28:1 (bringing sweet spices to anoint Him) 2, and verse 5
#12 Matthew 28:6 "He is not here: for He is risen as He said."

I was so impressed with the kids as we gave this little lesson.  More than that I was impressed with their primary teachers.  The kids knew many of the answers to the questions we would ask them.  I know it was because they have great primary teachers.

After the lesson we dyed Easter eggs together and made Easter treats to pass out.

I love how our eggs color.  The brown eggs always make the best rustic, earthy looking eggs.

Motherhood:-An-Eternal-Partnership

There are some days where as a mother you my think to yourself "Do they even hear me?", "Am I only here to pick up, wipe bums, cook, and drive?" There are days I loose my patience, and others where I have probably lost my tongue. There are days where I just want to curl up or walk away. I know I am not the only one, but at times I can make myself believe that I am the only mother going through these types of days. I start to compare myself to the other moms around me. You know the ones. The one with a spotless house. The one that never raises her voice or looses her mind. The one that has a fresh plate of cookies waiting for her kids when they arrive from school. The one that makes play dresses and forts and acts like a pirate with her kids. The more I think that she exists the more I realize that I am that mom too. I may not be it ALL the time, but I do try to be. We can't be all those things at once. There are days when the house has to be left a mess in order to make cookies with the kids or go out and enjoy a day at the beach looking for a pirate treasure. We are all THAT mom. EVERY mom has her troubles and trials with her children. In fact the older my children get the more I have. I know that there will be lots of ups and downs. But isn't it the downs that make us really appreciate those ups?

Recently a really good friend sent me a video that reminded me of my work as a mother. There are times that I forget that I don't have to do it alone. And by all means I don't with a wonderful husband. However, even when you do have a great companion by your side you need MORE help. That help only can come from the partnership of the Lord. Our work as mothers is a sacred one. One that our Father in Heaven as intrusted us with. One that he promises to help us fullfill if we remember him and allow him to. Thank you April for reminding me this by sending me the video.
It doesn't take long to quickly spiral and think that our work is unappreciated or feel that we are invisible.

Just this morning I was given an email by a woman at church. I don't know how many people she sent it too. I don't know if she just clicked an email list and sent it out in mass form. But I do know that I needed to hear it. I don't know who else needs to hear it, but I do know that there is someone out there who feels the same way I do at times and so I am going to share the email with you. I have also included the video that was given to me by my dear friend.

I don't know how to upload the video onto blogger so just click on the above link and it will take you there.

The Invisible Mother.....
It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, theway one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phoneand ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you seeI'm on the phone?'
Obviously not; no one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, orsweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, becauseno one can see me at all. I'm invisible.. The invisible Mom. Some days Iam only a pair of hands, nothing more! Can you fix this? Can you tiehis? Can you open this??
Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm aclock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer,'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around5:30, please.'
Some days I'm a crystal ball; 'Where's my other sock?, Where's myphone?, What's for dinner?'
I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and theeyes that studied history, music and literature -but now, they haddisappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going, she's going, she's gone!?
One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return ofa friend from England . She had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sittingthere, looking around at the others all put together so well.
It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself. I was feelingpretty pathetic, when she turned to me with a beautifully wrappedpackage, and said, 'I brought you this.' It was a book on the greatcathedrals of Europe.
I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read herinscription: 'With admiration for the greatness of what you are buildingwhen no one sees.'
In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I woulddiscover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, afterwhich I could pattern my work: 1) No one can say who built the greatcathedrals - we have no record of their names. 2) These builders gavetheir whole lives for a work they would never see finished. 3) They madegreat sacrifices and expected no credit. 4) The passion of theirbuilding was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.
A story of legend in the book told of a rich man who came to visit thecathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving atiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man,'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam thatwill be covered by the roof, No one will ever see it And the workmanreplied, 'Because God sees.'
I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It wasAlmost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you. I see thesacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does.
No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcakeyou've baked, no Cub Scout meeting, no last minute errand is too smallfor me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, butyou can't see right now what it will become.
I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. Asone of the people who show up at a job that they will never seefinished, to work on something that their name will never be on. Thewriter of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals couldever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing tosacrifice to that degree.
When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friendhe's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes aturkey for 3 hours and presses all the linens for the table.' Thatwould mean I'd built a monument to myself. I just want him to want tocome home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend,he'd say, 'You're gonna love it there...'
As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen ifwe're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the worldwill marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that hasbeen added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible mothers.
The Will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.
To all the wonderful mothers out there!!
May God give you...For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.

I do know that my work is worth it as a mother. I can see that it is when I see the joy in my children's eyes. I feel it in thier hugs and their their tender kisses. There is no other calling in this world that can replace that of being a mother. I know that at times it is hard. I know that at times it is lonely. But those times of trials are what remind me to get on my knees and ask for help. Those times I feel closest to my Savior and my Father in Heaven.

Symbols of Christmas: The Christmas Tree

Opening Song: Have a Very Merry Christmas Children's Songbook # 51
Opening Prayer: Daddy

Lesson: Mommy

What is this? (point to your christmas tree of a picture of one) Why do we have Christmas Trees at Christmas? (enjoy their varied answers!)

The Christmas Tree is a symbol of Christmas because :
The evergreen tree means lasting light and life. The needles of the tree point upwards towards heaven. As many things die in winter but the evergreen does not, it symbolizes life in the midst of death or rebirth.

Talk about why you like to put a star or angel on the top of your tree.
Read this scripture to go with your discussion.
Luke 2:9-12 for Angel
Matthew 2:2 for Star

Here is our Christmas Tree all decorated. I love having a tree in our house and I love the lights on it. I wish that I could get a picture of it with the lights on, but it I can't get one to turn out.
Activity:

Closing Song: Stars were Gleaming Childrens Songbook #37

Symbols of Christmas

As many of you know I love The Family Home Evening Spot. This is where I get alot of my ideas for lessons. Well once again she has posted a great lesson.
Every year the first lesson after Thanksgiving we give a lesson on the symbols of Christmas. We explain to the kids why we put a tree up, what the colors mean, and so on. This year I am taking my ideas from The Family Home Evening Spot and focusing on one symbol each week. I think this way the kids will remember them a little better and it gives us time for fun activities, and treats afterwards.

Family Home Evening Lesson

Christmas Wreath
Opening Song: 'Away in a Manger' Children's Songbook # 42
Opening Prayer: Daddy

Lesson: Mommy

Hold up a wreath or picture of a wreath

What is this? What does it mean? Why do we have wreaths at Christmas time?

Wreaths are like a circle. Which means no beginning 0r no ending. This symbolizes eternity - the unending cirle of life. The evergreen tree (used to make wreaths) means growth and everlasting life. Holly branches have thorns. When used in a wreath it symbolises the crown of thorns put on Jesus head when he was crucified. The red berries symbolize his blood that was shed for us.

Activity:
Make a wreath

Paper plate wreath instructions found here at filth wizardry very cute.

Coat hanger wreath:
Bend a coat hanger into circle shape. Secure tinsel with tape and wrap Tinsel around and around and around. Secure end with sticky tape. Add bows, decorations as you wish."

(This picture was taken by The Family Home Evening Spot. After our lesson tonight with the wreaths the kids make.)

Closing Prayer: Razy

Treat:
Wreath Candy using cornflakes and marshmellows
Hard Candy Wreath
Thanks again to The Family Home Evening Spot for the great ideas we find on the site. Go over and take a look. I know you will find something that your family will enjoy.

My Family Monday *Father's Preside, Provide, Protect*

For Family Home Evening this week we are extending the sharing time lesson that was taught on Sunday. The theme for the year is My Eternal Family. The months theme is Family Members Have Important Responsiblities. On Sunday we talked about Fathers preside over, provide for, and protect the family with love.

Opening Song: "My Eternal Family"
Opening Prayer:
Lesson: Fathers preside over, provide for, and protect the family with love.
How does our daddy preside over our family?
How does our daddy provide for our family?
How does our daddy protect our family?

Pin the tie on Daddy's shirt
Cut out one tie per father that you choose to do. I will give examples with the fathers that we chose for our lesson.

On each tie write information about each father.

1. This father prayed for his rebellious son. His son and his son's friends were visited by an angel and became great missionaries (Mosiah 27:8-18) Alma

2. When this father, a ruler of the synagogue begged Jesus to save his 12 year old daughter, the Savior raised her from the dead. (Luke 8:41-42) Jarius

3. This father saved his family by obeying the Lord's command to build an ark (Genesis 6:12-20) Noah

4. This man is the earthly Father of our whole human family (Genesis 3:20) Adam

5. This rich father left all his possessions behind when the Lord told him to flee in to the wilderness. He had two sons that supported him, but the otherr two murmured. (1 Nephi 2:1-3) Lehi

6. This father protects our family. He goes to work each day to provide for our family, but comes home each night to play and teach us. He loves each of you. Our daddy

You may or may not want to use pictures from the Gospel Art Kit to help your children picture who it is you are talking about.

Blindfold one child at a time as they try to place the tie on a pre made posterboard of a men's white shirt.

Closing Song: "Happy Family" (Children's Songbook pg.198)
Closing Prayer:

Refreshments: One of our Daddy's Favorite Treats
Orange Pull Aparts
2 cans of small pillsberry biscuits
4 TB milk
4 TB melted butter
1/2 cup sugar
tsp orange rind
4 oz cream cheese,
2 TB orange juice
Mix milk and butter together in a small bowl. Mix sugar and orange rind in a small bowl.
Cut biscuits in half and dip one side in butter/milk mixture and the other side in the sugar/rind mixture. As you go along place dipped pieces into a bundt pan, buttered side down. Bake at 350 for 20 mins. While biscuits are baking mix cream cheese, orange juice and remaining sugar mixture together. Drizzle over hot biscuits and serve.
JBody likes more of the drizzle so we like to use 8 oz of cream cheese, 4 TB orange juice and then add more sugar and orange rind to taste.

My Family Monday *Follow the Prophet*

Once again JBody is in charge of Family Home Evening. I don't know exactly what or how he is going to do his lesson but the following is what I do know.
picture from desertnews.com

Opening Song: "Follow the Prophet" (Children's Songbook #110)

Opening Prayer:

Lesson: The lesson is on following the Prophet.
As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are blessed to be led by living prophets—inspired men called to speak for the Lord, as did Moses, Isaiah, Peter, Paul, Nephi, Mormon, and other prophets of the scriptures. We sustain the President of the Church as prophet, seer, and revelator—the only person on the earth who receives revelation to guide the entire Church. We also sustain the counselors in the First Presidency and the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as prophets, seers, and revelators.

Like the prophets of old, prophets today testify of Jesus Christ and teach His gospel. They make known God's will and true character. They speak boldly and clearly, denouncing sin and warning of its consequences. At times, they may be inspired to prophesy of future events for our benefit.

We can always trust the living prophets. Their teachings reflect the will of the Lord, who declared: "What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same" (D&C 1:38).

Our greatest safety lies in strictly following the word of the Lord given through His prophets, particularly the current President of the Church. The Lord warns that those who ignore the words of the living prophets will fall (see D&C 1:14–16). He promises great blessings to those who follow the President of the Church:

"Thou shalt give heed unto all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me;

"For his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith.

"For by doing these things the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name's glory" (D&C 21:4–6).

—See True to the Faith (2004), 129–30 (This information is from lds.org for your references)

Activity: President Monson Says. Played just like Simon says, but using President Monson's name instead and using things that he teaches us.

Closing Song: "Latter-day Prophets" (Children's Songbook #134)

My Family Monday *Tithing*

Last weekend the boys watched my parents dog, Gunther for them while they were would of town. My mom and dad wanted to pay them for doing it (I think they WAY over paid them, but the boys were so excited). They each were given 10 one dollar bills. I thought this would be perfect to teach them about tithing. I asked JBody to give the lesson for Family Home Evening. Because I don't know exactly how he is going to teach the lesson I cannot put the lesson on our blog. However, I can tell you what he is going to teach and share with you what he hinted on doing.

Song: I'm Glad to Pay a Tithing (children songbook p.150)

Lesson: JBody will talk to the kids about tithing and what it is. He is going to give the kids 10 peices of candy. He will then asked each of them to give back one peice. Then he is going to read them Malachi 3:10

10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing , that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

After reading the scripture he will pour blessings (whole bag of candy) out to the kids.

Song: I Want to Give the Lord My Tenth (children songbook p.150)

I don't know if this is exactlty how he will teach this lesson, but it will be similar.

My Family Monday *A House of Order*

A House of Order
Song: When Your Helping Your Happy(Children Songbook p.198)

Scripture: Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God; (Doctrine and Covenants 88:119)

Lesson: Talk to the kids about the temple. Tell them about how the Temple is the House of the Lord. Ask them what type of place the temple is. Is it clean or dirty? Quiet or Loud? Ask them what type of house we have. Tell them that we want to keep our house more like the temple, but mommy and daddy can't do it alone. We need them to help out. Show them the chore chart that I created. Each chart has things like make your bed, brush your teeth, set and clear the table, pick up toys, ect. For each thing they complete they get a smiley face or something to show that they've completed the task. This way we are able to teach them the importance of helping out in a family.
I am hoping this helps them understand the importance of helping out and not leaving it all to mom and dad. I really do think that it will. We shall see.

My Family Monday

Lil' E came home from church on Sunday with this beautiful display of Joseph Smith's first vision. He had made it in his CTR 5 class. I was unable to attend church on Sunday because Doble and Razy were both sick. I thought that it would be nice to talk about Joseph Smith and have Lil' E tell us some things that he learned in his primary class. This way he could help teach the lesson.
The display Lil' E made in CTR 5 on Sunday
He was so proud of it. I'd have to agree with him. I love it.
Lesson: The Prophet Joseph Smith
Purpose:To help family members gain a testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Song:" The Sacred Grove" Children’s Songbook, p. 87
Scripture: Lil' E
Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you, my servant Joseph Smith, I am well pleased with your
offering and acknowledgments, which you have made; for unto this end have I raised you
up, that I might show forth my wisdom through the weak things of the earth.
(D&C 124:1)
Story: Mommy
"My Tiny Book of Joseph Smith" by Marion Passey
Testimony: Daddy
Bear testimony of Joseph Smith.
Activity: Joseph loved to wrestle. Have family members participate in one or both of the following wrestling matches.

Indian Arm Wrestling 1. Have two people sit down and face each other across a small table. make sure the opponents are not too different in size. 2. Both then place their right elbows side-by-side on the table and grip each other's right hands. The left hands must be placed on the table and must not grasp anything. 3. When the players are in position, give the command to start. The wrestlers try to touch their opponent's hand against the table without lifting their elbows.

Indian Leg Wrestling 1. Have two people lie on their backs side-by-side with their heads in opposite directions. You may prefer to have a pad or rug underneath. 2. Count to three slowly. On the count of one and two, both people raise their inside legs straight up. The two heels should meet when both legs are straight. On the count of three, the wrestlers lock legs and try to flip the other person over. The person who flips over first is the loser. (George and Jeane Chipman, Games! Games! Games! , [Salt Lake City: Shadow Mountain, 1983], p. 83-4.)
Song:
Treat:Honey Taffy. This was a pioneer favorite.
2 cups honey
1 cup sugar
1 cup cream
In a heavy saucepan combine all ingredients. Cook over low heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Continue cooking, stirring as little as possible. When mixture reaches hard ball stage (260° F.), remove from heat and pour onto a shallow, buttered 9x13-inch pan. Turn edges in with a spatula to prevent candy from hardening. When just cool enough to handle, divide in about 6 lengths and pull candy using buttered fingertips. Continue pulling until light and fluffy. Twist into ropes of desired thickness. With kitchen shears, cut into pieces of desired size. Wrap each piece with waxed paper. Makes 2 pounds. My Family Monday

This week for Family Home Evening we went to my parents house. My mom usually has my nephews come over on Monday nights and has a FHE lesson with them. This week we joined them. She taught them the story the Brother of Jared and the tower of Babel.
A Book of Mormon prophet. He and his brother founded the Jaredite nation when they led a colony of people from the Tower of Babel to a promised land in the western hemisphere (Ether 1-6). He was a man of such great faith that he spoke with the Lord face to face (D&C 17: 1). His story is recorded in the book of Ether.
The brother of Jared was a large and mighty man, and highly favored of the Lord,
Ether 1: 34. Because of his faith, the brother of Jared saw the finger of the Lord, Ether 3: 6-9 (Ether 12: 20). Christ showed his spirit body to the brother of Jared, Ether 3: 13-20. There never were greater things made manifest than those which were made manifest to the brother of Jared, Ether 4: 4. The brother of Jared warned his people against a monarchy, Ether 6: 22-23. The Lord showed all things to the brother of Jared, Ether 12: 21. The brother of Jared was mighty in writing, Ether 12: 24. Through faith the brother of Jared moved mount Zerin, Ether 12: 30. (Information found at http://scriptures.lds.org/en/gs/j/9)

The boys then had fun building their own towers out of rice crispy treats and seeing the tower fall over. We then played the old gray mare. They love this game.
How to play: One person leaves the room while someone else hides an object. The person who left the room then returns and looks while everyone sings...(the old gray mare he ain't what he used to be, ain't what he used to be, ain't what he used to be. The old gray mare he ain't what he used to be many long years ago. Many long years ago. Many long years ago. The old gray mare he ain't what he used to be many long years ago.) As the person looking gets closer to the object the singing gets louder. As he moves away the music gets softer. The game ends when the object is found. Then start over.
